Lot No: 5 in our September 2021 auction is a vintage Post-War Norris No: A5 smoothing plane with its original Norris iron also stamped Sorby and lacquered beechwood infill which is still mostly intact. Some discolouration to the sole and light pitting to the sides but nothing serious. The Adjuster has been checked and this works as it should.
These are a very good value affordable user grade planes and certainly should be considered as a good alternative to today’s premium planes. The last one we sold was to a working carpenter who had never used one before, this soon became his favourite smoothing plane and said in his words, “Why on earth haven’t I used one earlier?!”
Estimate 150-200
These are still selling at the same prices (without taking into consideration inflation) as they were in the 1990’s, they are a bargain if you can get a good one.
